3 Vital Signs That Your Child May Need Glasses

Blog

Are you the parent of a child in elementary school? Do you know how to tell if your child is in need of glasses? The younger your child is, the less likely he or she is to be able to tell you that his or her vision is in need of correction. He or she may simply think that what he or she is seeing is normal when, in actuality, it is in serious need of correction. As a parent, it's up to you to look for these signs and to get your child's vision checked out as soon as possible if you notice anything amiss. Some things that may signal vision issues include:

Problems at school: Not every child with behavior issues, learning difficulties or who seemingly has dyslexia has vision problems, but it's a good idea to take him or her to the optometrist to rule out this possibility. A child who is farsighted may have difficulty reading and telling the difference between the letters b and d or the letters o, e, a, and c. A child who is nearsighted may be able to read a book just fine but has difficulty paying attention in class and he or she may be getting into trouble for drawing or reading instead of following what's on the board.

Squinting a lot: When your child starts squinting all the time, even when he or she is not in bright light, this is a significant sign that he or she may need glasses. Squinting can help make things appear less blurry, even if your child's vision is not actually improved by the act. Squinting may be seen both in children who are nearsighted and in children who are farsighted, so you'll need to make an appointment with an optometrist to find out just what sort of vision correction may be necessary.

Regularly covering an eye: It's not uncommon for a person's eyes to have slightly different vision issues. A visit to the optometrist may reveal that one eye may need just a little correction while the other eye may need a lot more. Your child may unconsciously note this and close or cover his or her "bad" eye so that he or she can focus on what's being seen through his or her "good" eye. Getting a pair of glasses will allow your child to focus on what's in front of him or her rather than focusing on the effort of keeping one eye closed or covered.

Learning About Optometry Tools and Techniques

Hello, my name is Martin. Welcome to my site about optometry. I want to use this website to talk about all of the tools and techniques used to measure vision and eye health. Optometrists can accurately measure the patient's ability to see by simply performing a series of unique tests. The visions tests require the patient's participation to find the right prescription for corrective lenses. The rest of the exam is performed to check the health of the eye from the surface to the retina. I invite you to follow along and learn all you can about this interesting subject. Thanks for visiting.
